SOPREMA Announces The Renaming Of Their XPS Products

SOPREMA, a global leader in waterproofing, roofing, thermal and acoustic insulation solutions, announces a significant update to their extensive range of extruded polystyrene (XPS) insulation boards. Effective from 1st April 2024, SOPREMA implemented the renaming of their XPS products. As SOPREMA continues to expand the XPS portfolio with new products, this update aims to provide greater consistency and clarity.

What Is XPS?

SOPRAXPS insulation stands as a leading choice in high-performance extruded polystyrene insulation boards. The SOPREMA XPS portfolio of products is ideal for a range of applications, including inverted and green roofs, zero fall roof designs (paired with SOPREMA zero fall waterproofing systems), floors, walls, and below-ground applications. SOPREMA pride themselves in providing a product offering that excels in ease of installation and exceptional compressive strength.

Manufactured at SOPREMA’s facility in Tongeren, their XPS range is produced using 100% circular methods, incorporating recycled EPS waste and used XPS. This innovation supports their dedication to sustainability and reducing environmental impact.

What Changes Are Being Made?

The core quality of the product will remain unchanged. The primary adjustment involves renaming the existing portfolio to ensure greater clarity and consistency. The new names incorporate key attribute codes, highlighting factors such as strength, edge type, suitable surfaces and dimensional stability.

Additionally, SOPREMA are pleased to announce that the overall design thermal conductivity (lambda) values have improved by up to 0.003 W/mK. This enhancement allows for a reduced thickness of up to 30mm, depending on the target U-value.

XPS insulation has two key values: the declared value, which is measured under lab conditions on fresh boards, and the design value, which reflect real-life conditions.

Previously, achieving a U-value of 0.18 W/m²K with a single-layer board required a thickness of 200mm. With the new product, the same U-value can now be achieved with a thickness of only 180mm, saving 20mm.

*This calculation assumes a 200mm 2% reinforced deck with our double pour DuoFlex system, protection sheet and a 0.001fx & 3P correction factor.

Understand the New Naming System

To help customers understand the new naming system, here is a breakdown using the newly named SOPRAXPS 300 SL ES as an example:

  • 300: Compressive strength – available in 300, 500, 700.
  • S: Surface type – W (waffled), R (rough), S (skin), B (bricks).
  • L: Edge type – L-shape (L), straight (I), tongue and groove (E).
  • S: Dimensional stability – S (standard stability with declared compressive creep), N (standard stability without declared compressive creep), H (high stability with declared compressive creep).
